Jackson's First Pet

Usually we run a pretty tight ship at home. No rocks in the house, no dirt in your bed and absolutely no pets. We are not a dog family and you'll never see us digging a hole in our backyard to bury any deceased favorite pets. (Expect for one creepy Halloween night when Angie traipsed through our house carrying a shovel and an undisclosed object covered in a towel and wrapped in a grocery bag.)
But, this last Saturday I had to give in. Jackson has a sweet neighbor friend that likes to collect RolyPoly bugs and he has gone on some of her excursions in search for said bugs. Jackson found one of his own RolyPoly bugs and begged Daddy to let him keep it. Daddy quickly said "no" and thought that would be the end of it. Jackson being the little sneak that he is, asked Mommy if he could keep the RolyPoly bug. Now, normally Scott and I support each other in major decisions but I really felt like there would be no harm done if Jackson got to keep this RolyPoly. So, Mommy said "sure."
Jackson quickly went inside the house to find a container to store his RolyPoly in. He found a miniature water bottle and dropped the RolyPoly inside. We didn't know what the RolyPoly would eat so Jackson didn't put anything else into the bottle. Jackson carried that silly water bottle around for a few hours until we left for the afternoon. After we came back from our family adventure to the Scouting Expo, Jackson quickly found his RolyPoly again right where he had left it.
Now, I knew that this pet would be okay to have because I knew it wouldn't last very long. There would not be any poop to clean up and when it died, Jackson could always find another one either on his own or with the sweet neighbor girl.

I love RolyPoly bugs, good for you to let him have one. Luke has been "collecting" the "masquito like" flies that are around our lake but the rule is that he has to release them before he comes back in the house.

you are so funny, I bet Jackson thinks you are the coolest mom ever to let him have a pet. I hope he's not heartbroken when his Sammy dies, or whatever you have him named.

The RolyPoly died the same day. Jackson didn't even seem to notice.

We have some strange version of those down here. I think they're the same bug, but they're flatter. Kind of gross, really, cause I keep finding them in my house and often it's at a weird stage (like they're shedding skin or something). They're all squirmy and just disgusting.
